1. The Seventh Victim (1943): This movie is about a young girl who wanders New York City’s Greenwich Village in search of her missing sister and happens upon a cult of Satan worshipers. One of the most beloved of Val Lewton’s brilliantly moody productions, The Seventh Victim is a film way ahead of its time and is mesmerizing.

2. Odds against Tomorrow (1959): It is the third movie in Robert Ryan’s bigotry trilogy, other being the Crossfire and Bad Day at Blackrock. Odds against Tomorrow is a compelling story of three diverse men and a “One roll of the dice and we’re through forever” heist that brings these unlikely men together.

3. Psycho (1960): This movie is about a young woman, who steals 40,000$ from her employer’s client and races away from her old life so as to start a new one. But that doesn’t seem to be easy. On the way she stops at a hotel and thus starts a series of mishaps, which takes you on a gripping tale as to who the culprit is.

4. The Mask of Dmitrios (1944): It depicts the story of a mystery writer on the trail of career of crime in the Balkans, which has stimulated the writer’s awe, the film wallows deeply in discourse and tediously trite flashbacks. The built up suspense and mystery melodrama is surely a refinement in cinematic style and worth a watch.

5. What Lies Beneath (2000): Though this movie has been categorized in the horror genre, but it actually does better in the suspense feature as the audience witness a shocking conclusion in this movie. Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford star as a perfect couple, until Michelle Pfeiffer’s character begins to feel their home is haunted by a young woman who was recently killed. She begins a quest to find out who this woman was and why she is being haunted by her.

6. Rear Window (1954): Yet, another of Alfred’s brilliantly shot suspense movie, this classic film centers around a wheelchair-bound man who, in his boredom, takes up looking out his window and spying on his neighbors across the way. One night he convinces himself that his neighbor has committed murder and has a friend come help him investigate.

7. Primal Fear (1996): Having a brilliant script, Primal Fear is a must watch if you are a suspense lover. A young and sympathetic altar boy, played by Edward Norton, has been accused of killing a priest. His lawyer gets set to do his best to get him off the hook. Yet, as a typical suspense movie, the ending is quite unexpected and shocking.

8. Silence of the Lambs (1991): This is one of those movies that can cross many genres, including horror and drama, but it serves well as suspense. Jodie Foster stars as a rookie FBI agent. He investigates a serial killer named Buffalo Bill who kills and skins women. She is being helped by a locked-up serial killer played perfectly and maniacally by Anthony Hopkins. By the end, the audience is left rooting for both Jodie Foster and, oddly enough, Anthony Hopkins’ character.
