How to fight stage fright?

For some people the word ‘stage ‘sounds as dreadful as ‘death’. These are the people who go numb, cold and sweaty the moment they stand on a stage and face an audience; such people are said to be suffering from ‘stage fright’.
People suffering from performance anxiety would start trembling, sweating and shivering at the mere mention of the word ‘stage’. Stage fright is very common, especially among teenagers and youngsters and sometimes even among adults. Such people are generally over conscious about the people around them and what they will think about them. They feel extra self-conscious and tend to self-confidence when confronted with a huge audience. This is the reason why they don’t feel assured enough in front of a huge crowd/audience and tend to be petrified. Their heart starts throbbing, their mouth goes dry, their voice gets chocked in the throat and they seem to forget breathing for some time! Even very confident and eminent personalities often showcase these characteristics while facing a huge crowd.
So, if you share mutual signs mentioned above when you step on the stage, in front of the mike then you have indeed landed up on the right page! Some proficient weapons have been suggested below, which can help you fight a war against stage fright:
  • One of the most vital things: Do your homework properly. Be prepared and thorough with whatever you are going to present on the stage. This will help you gain confidence. If you don’t know your topic properly then you are bound to lose confidence and fumble on the stage.
  • Remember the old saying: Practice makes a man perfect. This is indeed the most important weapons of all. Practice vigorously before going on to the stage. Stand in front of the mirror and practice multiple times to gain confidence. Look at yourself in the mirror while practicing; Keep improving to make sure your body language, facial expressions and overall presentation is good enough when presented in front of the audience.
  • Before going on to the stage, induce positive thoughts about yourself and the audience in your mind and convince yourself that you can do it. Take a deep breath, relax and calm down yourself before you go on stage to give your performance.
  • Try reaching the venue few minutes before so that you can take time to acquaint yourself with the stage, surroundings, atmosphere and most important of all-the audience. Knowing your audience is a very crucial aspect to be kept in mind, especially when it comes to fighting stage fright.
  • Don’t ever be afraid of the audience because you must understand that the audience is there to watch your performance and not to criticise or judge. So even if you make mistake, don’t panic, apologise (in case of a speech), correct it and continue with your remnant performance.
  • The toughest task during a stage performance is: Facing the audience. This is one of the prime things, which triggers off stage fright in most of the people. To deal with this problem, make sure you don’t make an eye contact with the audience. Just normally and randomly keep panning your sight over everyone or if you are too scared to do that, look at the nearby walls in a way that the audience thinks that you are looking at them.
  • Last but not the least; this is like the golden key to overcome stage fright- Instead of creating a taboo out of stage performance and dreading it, make it a point to enjoy and relish it.
So next time you step on a stage, keep these points in mind, follow them and I can guarantee that you will surely get the loudest applaud ever from the audience!

College Campus Tour Tips

After high school, the utmost priority should be given to choosing the right college. ‘The right college’ is a very subjective term and depends on what you look for most when it comes to higher education. Do the extra-curricular activities matter to you or the faculty? Are you a fussy eater or not? Are you prepared to live away from your hometown for the purpose of your studies? The answers are varied and need to be thought about wisely. Jumping to a decision based on the views or guidance of others is not a good idea at all. Therefore, it is very important and you go and see the campus of the college for yourself.
While you are at the campus, remember to explore on your own. Try looking for directions on your own and ask a lot of people. You will not only understand the general layout of the campus but will understand how the student body acts and reacts to strangers. Do not forget to make a list of the facilities other than classrooms that the campus provides. Make a note of how big it is and observe what people seem to be doing in their free time. Ask yourself whether you can imagine yourself amidst these people in the same campus or not.
Do not forget to take a peep in various activities – the sports ground or the nurse’s office, for starters. You must remember to try the food out at the mess, canteen or any such common eating ground. See what shops are there around the college and you’ll see some typical college hangouts nearby. If you don’t like the food, see if a lot of other people are eating from there or somewhere else.
Look at all the notice boards when you are just walking around. They will give you a lot of more information than you can imagine. You’ll get a sneak peak on what is actually going on in the campus. Various contests, announcements, advertisements etc. will all be there. This gives you a general feel of the amount of activity that is going on in the campus.
Carry any required material with you such as ID proof, your certificates and so on because if you are meeting any professor or the Director even, you shall need these. While looking around the campus, it is also advisable to talk to one or two teachers and ask about general classes and so on. While on the tour itself, wear clothes and footwear that are formal but light. Do not tire yourself by wearing something you are not comfortable in. Remember, this is also your first impression. Make sure you leave a good imprint on the minds of others!
Ask about the campus at different times of the day. It is best to ask an existing student if he / she feels safe walking around the campus the night. Don’t forget to pick up any brochures, catalogues or other information that is kept on various stands. See if the students are from different schools of thought and from different nationalities. It is always better to be within a mixed demography since it gives scope for more personal growth and improvement.
Be sure to carry a list of questions with you. You must remember that this might be the only chance you have to tour a particular campus. You cannot afford to miss out any important details that the campus has to offer. Do keep in mind that you should make the best of this opportunity and weigh your options very carefully. If you are satisfied with all the tours that you make, admissions should not be a problem at all!

Steve Jobs Biography

Most innovative and ground-breaking inventions like Macintosh, Mac Book, i pad, i phone and i pod brought about a revolution in the world of technology and the only ‘i con’ who deserves all the credit is ‘Steve Jobs’ –who is considered as the father of modern technology by people today.

Steven Paul Jobs the CEO, co-founder and chairman of Apple Inc., was born on 24 February, 1955 in San Francisco, California. Paul and Clara Jobs adopted him from an unwed college graduate couple.
He spent his early years in the hub of computer technology i.e. Silicon Valley. At the age of 14, he came across Stephen Wozniak- a computer boffin. Jobs studied one semester in Reed College in Oregon and then dropped out. When he returned back to Valley he started taking interest in his friend, Woz’s effort on computer board. He attended the Homebrew Computer Club with Woz. He quickly realized its commercial demand andstarted assembling boards in his garage and sold them to computer stores. Thus Apple Computer was born!
While Jobs was selling, Woz came up with Apple II which wobbled the market with its superfluous advance technology. Looking at the growing market demand and popularity, Mike Markkula confided to invest $250, 000 in Job’s business to help him expand his business. Soon, Apple II flooded the markets. Steve Job’s fortune crossed $200 million when he was only 25.
In 1981 IBM, was preparing to venture into the market of PCs and Apple III was already blown-up in the market. So to retain in the market, they put all their vigour on Job’s new project- ‘Lisa’ whichwas equipped for the first time with GUI. But due Job’s erratic behaviour he was kicked out of Lisa Project.
Enraged, he decided to launch a new project called Macintosh, in an attempt to make it the cheapest and most user-friendly GUI computer ever. It was a big danger to Apple’s future as Lisa proved to be a disappointment in the market. So, in 1983 Jobs lend a helped John Sculley, the CEO of Apple and together they launched Macintosh with a huge success. But due to his haughtiness, he was refrained from having any managerial duties. This annoyed him all the more and so in 1986 he co-founded Pixar with George Lucas, thus making a profit of $10 million for the company.
Then depression period followed in Job’s life. He founded a new company called NeXt, which turned out to be a fiasco. Luckily, Pixar’s 1st feature film Toy Story proved to be 3rd highest domestic earning animated film, which added a worth of $1.5 million to Job’s bank account.
Meanwhile Apple Inc. had lost its track and writhed with a loss of $700 million. They called Jobs back to the company and hired his NeXt Step technology to replace the old one for $400 million. Soon in July 1997 he became the CEO of Apple.
With his arrival in the company, they were now climbing the steps of success with the launching of popular devices like Power Mac G3, PowerBook, iMacs, iBook, consumer Notebook, Mac OS X, and iApps. Then a turning point came in his life with the invention of iPod and iTunes which hit the markets with a big bang.
Steve Jobs still shared 50% of Pixar’s stocks. In 2005, he and the new CEO of Disney, Bob Iger started working together and thus Pixar and Disney merged together.
By now Apple Inc. had established its Brand name among the most trusted brands. Second big revolution occurred with the introduction of iPhone. Finally the third major event which marked its success in the history of Apple was the announcement ofiPad, Apple’s iOS-based tablet on January 27, 2010 thus putting an end to the era of PCs.
After the launch of incredibly marvellous iPhone 4S, on 5 October, 2011 not only Macworld, but the whole world mourned at the loss of iCon – Steve Jobs. He was truly a man with extraordinary endowments. He gave a completely new direction to the modern world of technology with Apple Products and compelled the world to ‘Think Different’. Hats off!to this great man.

Digital Teaching

With technological advancements as its primary achievement, undoubtedly this generation of ours is set to unfold the digital world of the future. People being more equipped with technology can hardly complain of connectivity issues in these modern times and in order to run this digital structure, skilled individuals are the call of the future. The sooner people start to realize this, the sooner are we to witness the change in the educational systems across the globe.
Many institutions have already successfully applied this modern tool of education to replace the age old teacher-pupil system, that to be fair has outlived its expected life course in this society of ours. Digital teaching system tries to incorporate technology with the process of learning, enabling the teacher to have digital tools to prepare, conduct and assess the class on a daily basis, perhaps in some cases extending into flexible learning method for students, which has produced better results when tested against the standard system of education prevailing in most schools. What digital teaching really does is break down a classroom, transforming the general ratio to 1:1 between the teacher and the student by empowering each student to have a private teacher onscreen. This provides the students with an individual tutor to help them learn at their own speed and skill levels. Teachers also find digital systems handy as they can easily gain an academic insight on the student just via few clicks to view his/her assignments, papers and exam sheets.
Digital teaching systems create a unique and interactive platform for students to learn various languages, solve math problems and understand science by isolating the learner from his/her peers on the academic scale without letting it affect the child’s growth in a classroom. This makes the student free to excel at whichever field they like with no limitations. One may question if this cuts out the competitive spirit a classroom generates, but one does need to understand the changing dynamics of the modern society where children need not be forced to understand the competitive edge of life. They’re pretty quick to grasp onto it. However, to completely negate this doubt, digital learning ensures that the student has to comply within the time frame at hand for any task. If this condition is met, then the standard required is certainly met.
With all these beneficial promises and certified results, digital teaching is almost set to take on the future of the learning process, marking a new and more importantly a better system of education for the people of tomorrow, who need to be in sync with the technological leaps we take every now and then along with an assurance of complete understanding of the subject data providing each student with a holistic development opportunity.

Studies in the Kangaroo Land

Over the past several years a common practice of pursuing higher education abroad, has been witnessed amongst the Indian and other Asian students. Talking of tertiary education, Australia has been playing a significant role.
According to the Government’s Australian Education International 2010 international student enrolments data, the highest number of enrolments was seen in the management and commerce sector (51.6%), while the Vocational Education and Training (VET) sector management and commerce registered 42.6% of enrolments. The second largest field of study in the VET sector was food, hospitality and personal services (Hotel management and other cookery programs), with 25.7% of enrolments. The English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) sector has also seen a significant number of enrollments.
New South Wales and Victoria are amongst the top Australian towns to by far attract the biggest numbers of international students. However, even the Melbourne Business School has a large intake of international students.
Having said all of this, Australia has seen a 20% decline in the number of student visa applications and especially from the Indian hemisphere due to three major reasons: Firstly, the racial attacks and robbery cases on Indian students last year. Secondly, better performance by the Australian competitors such as UK and USA and thirdly, the Australian dollar has become much stronger and is thus becoming unaffordable, the Immigration Department reports suggest.
When a parent sends their child outside the house to study, their priority is the child’s safety and the issue is of even greater concern if the one is going overseas. Australia has various provisions for an International students’ safety, one of them being the Health insurance policy which is incorporated right at the time of admission in most of the universities. This insurance takes care of any medical aide that the child requires during his stay in Australia.
At a news conference in Canberra on Sept. 22, 2011 Senator Christopher Evans, the minister for tertiary education, skills, jobs and workplace relations said, “a two-year post-study visa, streamlined visa processing and more relaxed rules on students’ financial situations”.
Even though tertiary education norms might be better in India, primary education is blooming at a much higher pace in the Australian continent. “The relaxed and burden free schedule of the children up till the fifth standard has enabled both mental and physical growth in the young minds”, said Mrs. Pooja Dua, an NRI living in Australia.
Therefore, even though Australia might see a lot of ups and downs in the number of International applicants, it is still recognized to be one of the best places to attain education.

Leading online schools

The Internet has revolutionized many parts of our economy. You can shop, meet people online and, now, you can take college courses for credit. Five schools are influencing “distance learning” like no others before them. Let’s take a look at online education providers as offered by these leading schools.
The University of Phoenix was among the first accredited universities to provide college degree programs via the Internet. Founded in 1976, the university began to offer Internet degree programs in 1989. The program has grown to where 150,000 students are in the process of pursuing degrees on the Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral level at any given time. Programs in Technology, Business, Education, Nursing, and Management are offered and The University of Phoenix has now become the largest private university in the US.
DeVry University offers business and technology degrees on the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition, the school offers graduate level certificate programs. Headquartered in Illinois, the school allows students to work on their degree while online, at a local campus, or both. Indeed, campuses can now be found in 21 states as well as in Alberta, Canada.
Westwood College traces its roots to Denver, Colorado where it was founded in 1953 as the Denver Institute of Technology. Fifteen campuses in California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, and Texas comprise the physical campus with the Internet opening up the school to students around the world. Westwood offers programs in Aviation, Business, Criminal Justice, Design, Technology, Health Sciences, and Industrial Sciences
Kaplan University is a wholly owned company of The Washington Post Company, a publisher of one the nation’s leading newspapers, The Washington Post. Kaplan’s offerings include degrees in Arts and Science, Business, Criminal Justice, Education, Technology and Design, Nursing and Health Care, Paralegal Studies, and Financial Planning. The school offers students degrees on the Associates, Bachelors, and Masters levels as well as certificates for certain programs.
Founded in Naples, Florida in 1970 by a couple who wanted to offer a way for working adults to pursue doctoral degrees, Walden University has evolved into a large, online university offering students degrees on the Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral level. Now headquartered in Minneapolis, the university features five distinct schools: School of Education, School of Management, School of Health and Human Services, School of Psychology, and the NTU School of Engineering and Applied Science.
Online education is not for everyone and that is why the first three universities give to their students the option to study on campus, while the last two are strictly Internet based. However, all five schools offer to students something that traditional programs do not have: the opportunity to pursue a degree at a pace the student determines and at a place [your computer] that is appealing to many. Unquestionably, online education has arrived as a viable alternative for degree seeking students around the world.
